49. Van Quirk's Lunar Cable *********************************************************** expanding, much like a balloon being inflated. Then the earth shook violently, flinging them all off their feet. Larger and larger grew the moon till it filled the entire sky. Buildings fell down, and the air was filled with the shouts and screams of the terrified people. "It'll only be a few more minutes," whispered someone close to him. "Damn that cable!" shouted the professor wildly. "They might have known that they couldn't tamper with the planets like that and got away with it! Damn the cable!" Another violent quake, this time almost shaking the professor out of his clothes. He could see the cable now, and it seemed to stretch across the country like a long silvery serpent. The moon terrified him so he closed his eyes. "Damn the cable and the moon both!" screamed Professor Q. Van Quirk. No one cared now what he said. He didn't care much himself either, for that matter. It was the end now, he decided. Another violent shake. The earthquakes were more frequent, more violent. Then he heard a female voice just behind him saying: "Van Quirk! Van Quirk! What's the matter?" That, he decided, was his wife. She had always called him Van Quirk, ever since they were first married. He did not open his eyes for he could not bear to see her for the last time. Agan that voice was calling, "Van Quirk!" He opened his eyes. The light from the moon made him blink as he looked about him.
