[handwritten] Science Fiction Collector Page 11 [typewritten] is 8 1/2" x 11"" in size, and, has single columns with uneven edges. the hectographing this issue is rather bad --- due to the weather, no doubt. * * * * * * * * * * * IMAGINATION! --- This magazine is issued by T.B. Yerk for a dime a copy. The illustrations are all lousy -- obviously penned by some amateur "amateur artist" -- if you get what I mean. The hectographing is bad -- though some spots turned out pretty fair. The method of printing is sloppy -- making use of the so-called ultra-modern method of writing. The material, however, is much better than the appearance of the magazine would lead one to believe. With a lot of hecto-experience behind him, Yerke may some day turn out a real good fan magazine. * * * * * * * * * * * SCIENTIFICTION --- The fourth issue has appeared -- it features an interview with Eric Frank Russell, also having a photo of Russell printed with the article. D.R. Smith and H.D. Wilson have articles in this issue. Also contained are the regular columns, however, this time minus "Fanfare." * * * * * * * * * * * NOVAE TERRAE --- There is an improvement in format with this August-September issue. Now the magazine is stapled together instead of sewn, as formerly, also -- the method of reproduction has improved. This issue lives up to the usual standard of good material with articles by Albert Griffiths, E.J. Carnell, Eric C. Williams, Claire P. Beck, and Ken Chapman. The editorial office has moved to London. * * * * * * * * * * * * BRITISH BIBLIOGRAPHY -- This publication did not live up to what I had expected. I had expected a godd review of every book mentioned (though, confess I wondered at the size it would necessarily have to be) and was rather dejected at merely a list of books with their prices. Still, it is a very useful publication and every book collector should have a copy. * * * * * * * * * * * * [handwritten] English Epigrams [illustration of a futurist structure] BIRTH OF FANDOM --- September BIS meeting brought sudden influx of science fiction fans to the gathering. Twofold reasons being the BIS and chance to meet other fans who reside in London. Meet the fella's --- You'll be hearing plenty more about them in the future. Walter H. Gillings you all know of -- first British columnist to pan an American fan mag (Fantasy), editor-owner of SCIENTIFICTION already making a name for itself as the finest printed mag in the world, and also the new editor of TALES OF WONDER promag, Britain's first serious attempt at regular science fiction. Maurice K. Hanson and Denny Jacques, the Leicester fans responsible for the fine effort NOVAE TERRAE. Both have moved to London, where they are working, and will be well to the fore in all fan activities. Arthur Clarke, BIS treasurer, ranks about fourth in the country for the largest stf collection. Bosom pal of Gillings and your columnist. Ken Chapman, Eric Williams, and Bill Temple, three South London fans who have been having a large number of get-togethers this summer. Temple has had several stf stories published over here. All three are swell guys.
