*** THE FANTASY AMATEUR *** September 1944 Schenectady, New York VoI VIII No 1 Official organ fo the Fantasy Amateur Press Association Officers of the FAPA: President: Robert W. Lowndes Secretary-Treasurer: A. L. Schwartz Vice-President: Al Ashley Official Editor: Larry Shaw AL ASHLEY'S MESSAGE Dear Larry: 7 August 1944 Just received official ballot results from Walt. Also your tirade against him. Too bad you send that out, for Walt definitely was no to blame. Considering the sections represented on the ballots by candidates, the LA bunch was the only place I could turn to for three guys for the counting committee. And with all the feuding going out there, I was rather nonplussed on just what three guys could work together without my seeming to favor one group over the other. Mike Fern happened to be here at the time I faced the decision, so I asked his advice. He assured me that Walt, Brown and Bronson would get along OK. I now quote from a note appended to the result sheet that Walt send me: "You will find OK's of Brown and Bronson on separate sheets, Sorry to have taken so long, but Bronson was appointed, and I finally had to drive 40 miles to Santa Monica and back to get his signature. For Ghu's sake don't put him on any more fan committees. He admits himself that he is no longer a fan, and any committee he is on is a hardship to all." Take it from me, Larry, Walt Daugherty isn't what a great many fans have painted him. I happen to know, for one thing, just how hard he's been working on this NFFF duties. Far too often, when someone seems to have fallen down on his duties there is a perfectly good reason behind it. One has to be sorta hesitant about denouncing a guy until certain it is indicated---a fact I've had rubbed in, to my great chagrin, on a number of occasions. Under separate cover I'm sending a bunch of these result sheets. As it seems to devolve upon me to notify the candidates, that seemed the easiest way. i'll mail copies to all those listed on the ballot. If you wish you can use what I send you to mail the membership. I didn't mean to intrude on your intention to send out cards. But as long as the stoneil was cut it was no trouble to run the extras. So do as you wish them. Tendrilly, Al OFFICIAL EDITOR'S MESSAGE (I): Thanks, Al, for the result sheets. Since it was so close to the time for the mailing anyway. I've kept them and used them as part of the FA. Concerning the Daugherty affair, I'd simply like to point out that the Bulletin was not primarily a tirade against Walt, but an effort to save the entire organization a great deal of trouble and confusion just in case, as circumstances made it appear probable, the election results were not made known in time for the mailing. I don't think any apologies are necessary, and I'm making none. --Larry 2
