720 - 7th Street January 5, 1972 Mr. William H. Bailey Civil Rights Specialist Office of the Secretary of Transportation Washington, D. C. 20590 Dear Mr. Bailey; Since our last conversation, regarding the proposed relocation of U.S. Highway 61, through the city of Fort Madison, little has been done, officially, until recently. A the time, city officials and legislators started "pushing" the Highway Commission, into action. Federal approval was not granted, pending further action, by the Iowa Highway Commission. So, on the 27th of January, 1972, another "public hearing" will be held. Commission members and city officials have gone on record as favoring the "south" route, which was involved in your investigation. Am enclosing, at the time, a copy of a letter which I have written to Mr. Lally, renewing my charge of discrimination against the Iowa Highway Commission. I do this, to keep you informed as to where we are, to date, because you handled the investigation. Incidently, I have been informed that the Highway will go trhough, this time, regardless. Sincerely, (Miss) Virginia Harper Branch Administrative Secretary
