Ft Madison, Iowa 52627 Dear Mr. Smith: Your attention is directed to my letter of August 6th in which I responded to your letters of June 14th and July 16th concerning the NAACP complaint about re-routing of Highway 61 through Ft. Madison. You will note my reference to the absence of information on the subject here in the National Office, and uncertainty as to the extent of our local branch involvement. In an effort to ascertain more information about the situation, I made further inquiries. These inquiries revealed that our legal department had been directly contacted by the branch and has, since that time, been providing assistance. This assistance dates back as far as January 1972. As sometimes happens, branches communicate directly with our legal department rather than with the Director of Branches. As a result of this procedure having been followed in the Ft. Madison instance, I was unable to give you a complete picture in my letter of August 6th. I trust this later information provides you with the answer you sought in your early inquiry. Very sincerely yours, [[Signature]]Ray Wilkins Ray Wilkins Executive Director RW:jrm
