2 7. The State of Iowa is years behind the rest of the nation in its Highway system. We are still building two-lane highways, while four-lane roads are proven to be the goal where U.S. Highways are concerned. Iowa needs to improve its North-South system, so it will compare with the improved highway system which it runs into, in State of Missouri. 8. The relocation of U.S. 61 through the city of Fort Madison, will not be of benefit as far as the total community is concerned. It is an unprogressive move and only points out the fact that what certain "vested" interest deem suitable, because of the favorable results, for them, the rest of the community is to be disregarded. We feel, that we, as taxpayers, are entitled to the right of planning and helping to decide what goes on in our community. 9. Those of us who are taxpayers, and regular users of Highway 61, are also concerned and feel we should have a right to help decide whether our tax dollars should be "thrown" away, or used in a practical and progressive manner. For ALL of the above stated reasons, we wish to see the present plans for relocation discarded, and replaced with plans for a By-Pass to the north of the City of Fort Madison.
