using this geometry, there is a [sketch/picture] flat crystal with leads attached to each end very wide spread of pulse heights -- presumably because of the very different path lengths which the electrons have to make multiplicative collisions. McIlwain proposes [sketch/picture] each face of crystal covered with layer of material evaporated "electrodes" on opposite faces of a thin CdS crystal as a more promising possibility for obtaining more nearly uniform pulse heights for a given energy.
