After return to Iowa City I mentioned this conversation to Nelson, McDonald & [K.?] Anderson and asked their ideas on understanding what I had heard. McDonald had already heard of this scheme and had some of the basic references. He also said that he had learned of it at Convair last summer and that Convair had planned to use this as a moon's magnetic field magnetometer. Varian offered to develop it in suitable compact form for $50,000 but Convair had not gone ahead with it ! Some basic references: A. [Kastler?], J.
