9 August 1958 I called McIlwain in Iowa City on Thursday evening with the main purpose of proposing that Detector B (the Cs I crystal channel) be heavily shielded on Explorer V flight - i.e. that the 0.7 mg/(cm squared) approximately of nickel foil be replaced by ~ 1/8 inch of aluminum Reasons as follows: (a) Explorer IV seems to be providing quite satisfactory reading for the thin window case and there is little point to a straight repetition. (b) The thin window case has no pertinence to the A.E.C. problem. (c) The high intensity radiation may very well be dominantly protons. Injection mechanism may be -- decay of albedo (upward moving from top of atmosphere)
