(d) With thick shield over Cs I detector we confine our observations to the more penetrating portion of the radiation. (e) Explorer IV is working fine. Its data with the thin window over the Cs I crystal will presumably have given good coverage of the physical situation under these conditions of observation. Hence V may as well and in fact more profitably should have a different arrangement. We had previously agreed to reduce the dimensions of the plastic scintillator on detector A . McIlwain advised that on the basis of rough but detailed calculations he had settled on dimensions as follows for the plastic
