--- Science Fiction Collector --- 15 _____________________________________ second, I revel in the fact that my interest is still being maintained at a tremendously high level, and that unpleasant experiences - though far fron few - have been effectively counteracted by the fine qualities displayed by a few of my acquaintances. I cannot expect the field to be perfect when I am far from perfect myself. Another thing that is a constant cause of joy to me these days is the reviving interest in the fundamental basis of the fan magazines -- the professional science-fiction magazines. It's not so long ago that I peeked fearfully into the window of science-fiction fan activities, and, finding them to my interest, clattered through the open window and landed 'kerplop' right in the middle of things. I say it's not so long ago, but looking at the situation correctly, I have been in the fan field for a number of months shy of two years, and a fan of two years standing is considered very old, indeed; especially if those two years have been ones of intense activity. Actually, however, I can claim only about one full year of intense activities and consign the rest to experience. What thrilling landmarks I have encountered in these past few years. Banners blazing an unforgettable trail and everyone recorded in the annals of my fan magazine files. Remember the old version of modern fandom that existed two years ago? There was the resolute, rssing star of Conover - a fan who set a pace of such whirlwind speed in his activities that he put Ackerman to shame, and set an all-time record for concentrated activities. Maybe that's why he couldn't last. He had set up no solid foundation to withstand unexpected shocks.
