Page Twenty --- S - F Collector --- _____________________________________ lications. Hence the wide variety of fan periodicals destined to take the place, at least temporarily, in the enjoyment of those science fiction fans who could no longer endure the putrid quality of the science-fiction magazines. Now the professional science-fiction magazines are coming into their own again. This does not necessarily mean the death of the fan field. If anything, more new fans are joining our ranks. However, it does mean that what I predicted in an unpublished article written almost two years back. It means that the gradual organization of the fan world into several powerful organizations. Science fiction organizations that really deserve the name. I do not feel safe in citing examples, but I think this tendencyis apparant in thetremendous success of the "First National Science Fiction Convention," and in the fact that the era in which fan magazines seemed to be popping up like flies haphazardly all over the country is definitely over. New fan magazines are appearing, but a little investigation will show that they are all being sponsored by a few organizations. The entire American fan-field can be summed up by saying, Comet, Cosmic, Galaxy, L.A. & Futile Press. The only loose factors being Wilson's NEWS LETTER, Marconette's SCIENTI-SNAPS and Leadabrand's UNIQUE. I've left out the FAFA and the SFAA. I don't think that a summary of the entire American fan field would have been as easy a few years back. All that remains to be said is that science fiction evolves quickly, and that the fans of today are living through a most epic-making period of science fiction fandom. I think the beginning of the final formation of a great compact fandom revolving around a new, strong base will begin to make its appearance around the end of this year. Fandom is in for a few amazing changes and all I can say is that I don't believe things will be as insecure as some things that happened not so long ago.
