Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER, NEGRO HISTORY WEEK 1970, FEBRUARY 12, 1970 Fort Madison, Iowa, 52627 Negro History Week was initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, and it is largely through his efforts that it is celebrated, each February. He said, "The creation of Negro History Week exposed the bias in textbooks, bared the prejudice of teachers and compelled treating black people history as other people are treated." Dr. Woodson taught many a white scholar to shed his chauvinism and many more black scholars to shed their feelings of inferiority. W.E.B. Dubois said of him, "He literally made this country, which has only the slightest respect for people of color, recognize and celebrate each year, a week in which it studied the effect which the American Negro has upon life, thought and action in the United States. I know of no one man who in a lifetime, has unaided, built up such a national celebration." EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING - SUNDAY 5:30 PM- FEBRUARY 15, 1970 CITY HALL REGULAR MEMBERSHIP MEETING - 6:30PM- SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15, 1970 Persons with paid memberships who have not received their cards, will get them in the near future. I regret the delay, but circumstances made it unavoidable. Thank you for being patient. "A significant step in developing this determination to build peace in our time rests in the awareness each of us must have that we must be racist in the sense that we must be dedicated to the one race - the human race." Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston There will be no series of programs for Negro History Week, this year. However, we hope that during the year, we will be able to present some special events which will be a credit to the community, as we have in the past. The 70's..., the decade which we are just beginning... offer a tremendous challenge to all of us ! Each and every individual has a responsibility to accept the challenge which these times offer, .... that is, if we are sincerely concerned with peace and the future of America. We've had reports from all sorts of commissions.... warnings from Sociologists, etc., and still, most people continue to be apathetic and complacent,... as, if, somehow they are removed fro all that is going on around us. The fact is that none of us are removed... we are all very much a part of what America will become ! We have been warned that the Roman Empire and 19 other nations failed because they ignored their domestic problems !! The challenge belongs to you! ! !
