Saving...
July 12, 1971 Mr. Robert Wilson 201830 Box 316 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 Dear Mr. Wilson, You can rest assured that in the matter of my involvement, in the area of civil or human rights, that personal evaluations are not of any moment. You are a human being, who is black and is entitled to certain rights because you are a citizen of this country. Liking or disliking is of no consequence, for in reality, I love all men because they are creatures of God and in spite of the fact that they are human and have faults. For you see, at the same time, I am also human, and I, too, have faults. In spite of these and the fact that God created me a "beautiful black",...I ask only that I be accepted for what I am...a human being with the same feelings and wishes that every other man has, regardless of his race, color or creed. These and the rights enjoyed by some of the citizens of this country, should be guaranteed to everyone. At this time, the only lawyer to whom I could refer you, would be Mr. Tom Kelly, President of the Iowa State NAACP Conference. His Address: 210 Walgreen Building 200 Main Street Davenport, Iowa It was my belief, however, that your rights have been violated and that you were discriminated against because of the color of your skin. That is, if the case is as you stated it, to me. Also, if others are afforded the same freedom that you were denied. If this is the case, you should file a complaint with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. The NAACP is not equipped on a local level, to handle legal cases, as such. There is neither the personnel or the money to handle such cases. So, we try hard to find those avenues which are available which might best take care of the matters which are presented. We, of the NAACP feel quite handicapped, and are trying to work things out, so that we might become better equipped to handle the complaints we get. Sincerely, (Miss) Virginia Harper
