720 - 7th Street July 18, 1971 Young Mens Christian Association 331 Avenue D Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 Attn: Executive Director Dear Sir: We, at the Fort Madison Branch, NAACP, are quite disturbed at the action taken by the Jackson, Mississippi, YMCA in the conversion of the formerly "public" swimming pool into an "all white" private one. It is our feeling, that some overt action on the part of the local YMCA, is in order. The Fort Madison, YMCA called on us for financial support, and we responded. We, now, call on you, for moral support. Your organization is supposedly founded on Christian ideals and principles, designed to improve conditions throughout this country, of ours. The action of the Jackson, Mississippi "Y", can only be detrimental. We are asking you, to at least, censure the group, by letter. Also, we ask that you inform your national office, making them aware of the feelings of many who support your organization. We also ask that we be informed as to what action you take. Sincerely, (Miss) Virginia Harper Branch Administrative Secretary
