VOX [FAN?] From JOE FORTIER: Finest story of the issue was Pong's nice bit. As The Cow Flies, I belive that it is Tucker's best piece of work to date. I thought that small piece which I published, VITONS, VITAMINES, VITAPHONES, was best, but this really hit the stellar note. There was a good plot behind it, and it was worked out to best advantage. As usual, Bob brought in a note of humor, but one which meant something, instead of just rambling along as is usual. I might mention that I thought that the illustration for the story was a little bit shot. The cover illustration was fair, but the girl looked more like the woman from Mars than a likable human [lass?]. Colours were nice...... BLACKLIST was splendid as far as that type of story goes. The style used in this story is such as the great Maupassent used. The ending was just as he would have made use of . Keep it up, Lowndes: Vol Molesworth's bit gets no special praise or panning from me. A so-so story and some will like it, others will think it terrible, a few mite even hail it greatest in history of fandom. Depends altogether on the reader. From ARTHUR L. WIDNER, JR: Cover only 5. Praps twas mor yor fault than Marconettes, but I didn't care so much 4 it. Th genral efect is good, but it dosnt bear close scrutiny. Th monstr isnt bad, but the girl is about as shapely as a sak of potatoes, & her thums point th rong way. U got a smuj of ink on her chin that looks like a 3 day beard. (Not I-WEM. HW) AS THE COW FLIES gets?- I think praps i xpectd 2 much. Wen I c something with Pongs name atacht I get set 2 start howling from ths lst sentens on. AS THE COW FLIES had only 2 or 3 screams per paragraf. Pong is definitly slippin. BLACKLIST had a most intriging theme, & seemed worthy of betr development & endin. To fan ficsh howevr I giv it 9. STRANGEST IS SPACE was colosaly mediocr. 5. I gess tahtsall there. From JACK SPEER: As Cow Flies was good mostly, tho a little everdonely clumsy in spots. Blacklist's endind quite unsatisfying. Not so good. Strangest Is Space rather poor generally. Amateurishly written, among other things. The cover, frankly, stank horribly. WEM must mot have been trying very hard on it. I thot your hektoing OK; it was readable thruout, which some of these more heavily-hektoed things aren't. From HENRY D. GOLIMAN: "Strangest Is Space" rolls along fine but the ending is one of the flattest I think I have ever read. With a different ending, this would have been a swell story. 3 points. "As the Cow Flies" is the worst I ever read by Pong. He seems to be trying to write a straight story and a humorous story at the same time and it is lousy. 1 point (and that only because of its author. The best story was "Blacklist" and it seemed to be loosely written. The plot was good, although old, but it must have been written in a hurry. 6 points. Cover. It doesn't male much sense but it is very well reproduced and that gives it 9 points. The [hektoing?] is the best I have ever seen. For once my eyes did not hurt after finishing. [Mimegraphing?] would be better still. A readers Dept would be all right but nothing more. You have something new in H so don't change it with articles and departments. Keep that for Spaceways. Editor's note: Even though we didn't ask for them, several sets of ratings came in on the contents of last issue. Too few, however, for averaging up. Suffuce to say that "Blacklist" seemed most generally liked; and the cover was though better than the above comments would seem to prove. If you'd care to rats the few things this issue, it would be appreciated, and results published. One more thing: please excuse what we [joldnhly?] call "page 2". I warn you don't even try to read it! I will not be held responsible for any cases of damaged vision, if you should resort to that dangerous risk--fir it would be a real danger. ---------- And don't forget to send your own fiction brain-child in to Horizons. If it's at all decent--we'll print it. Toappear next issue: "The Trespassers", by Albert Woodward--the only manuscript now onhand. So send in yours! And re-subscribe
