The non-rational is that thought or action which violates any or all of these requirements. To return to history, it can easily be discovered that a large percentage, a predominant percentage of human action is non-rational. It can further be discovered that a favorite tendency in human thought is to establish "Values", stable and supposedly "eternal" standards of judgement which, if applied to any and all phases of human activity or existance, will enable the individual to determine "desirability" and "undesirability" and "Good" and "Evil". Since it is demonstratable that nothing in nature is stable, it follows that any "Value" or "standard of judgement" which presupposes Stability is invalid. It also follows that any "System" or "Program" or "Theory" in relation to human action which presupposes predominant rationality in human action, is likewise invalid. (An example of invalid "Value" is the so-called "eternal Truth"; an example of invalid "Program" or "Theory" is democracy. It presupposes that large groups of human beings, known as "nations", ar [sic] capable of "rule", democracy requires for its existance [sic] a demonstrated impossibility. That is why, whenever in the course of history, the theory has been attempted in practice, it has very quickly ceased to be "democracy" in anything but name. *) We see as outstanding non-rationalities in human thought and action, the pursuit of Stability, and the search for a single "Value" (or "The Truth"). The pursuit of Stability presupposes an impossible extension into time -- the "permanent society"; the "law that shall endure forever"; the governments and empires and new calendars; the physical wonders of the world. And the search for the single "Value" or "Pattern of History" presupposes an undemonstratable dead center, unchanging, from which all changes can be observed and charted, and predicted, even unto the tangled pattern of human rationality/non-rationality. We know of pronouncements of Stability in regard to civilizations and physical wonders of the world, which exist in fragmentary records, or which still stand, as the pyramids, "stable" in relation to an individual's time-span, but passing away even as the individual. We are familiar with individuals and groups who announce they have found the "pattern", whether it be a God, a religion, or a socio/economico/historical "pattern". (We know, too, that in relation to the latter, the procedure of such groups has nearly always been (a) to ignore or tailor facts which did not or do not fit into the pattern (b) to suppress persistent unsquared facts (c) to persecute, *********************************** cussioninthefapamailingsandi'mlookingforwardtowhatthebigbrainswillbe *********************************** * "Democracy" is not to be equated with the "democratic tendency", which is another matter entirely, and which we shall consider in a future article.
