Venal #1 - July, 1946 - page four ************************************** satisfiedandcomethroughwithvariousvarietiesofmoreanywayhere'stoyouall ************************************** [title underlined] SACHS Saw in the morning the wings, watched their shadows darken the corn, lakes, fairy spires of the city; Smelled on the wind grass-scent mingled with petrol; (the mares are throwing some good colts this year) Heard on the newscasts the words, felt an invisible needle probing. Anger. The quick wrist motion. Silence. Clasped the man-child's shoulder (child?) making no sign, no answer when he echoed the dove-words, streamlined, glittering, welded; Tasted fear on her lips in the dusk, thought of the letters, telegrams, registers, ballots. "Manchmal steh! ich auf mitten in der Nact Und lass die Uhren alle, alle stehn. Allein man muss sich auch vor ihr nicht furchten?" (Quotation from von Hofmannstahl "Der Rosenkavalier", Act 1) *********************************** Material in [underlined] Venal has been reprinted from [underlined] Agenbite of Inwit by special permission of the publisher. *********************************** [title underlined] In case you were wondering RENASCENCE is [underlined] not a fan magazine (It does, however, recognized fantasy as a branch of literature -- and an important branch at that.)
