have worn those plots thin! Many of the old classics are dated and would not even be accepted by modern editors. Therefore it seems to me that when Evans read the book he forgot to put himself in the proper mood for the period of the story, and was talking slightly out of turn when he hollers "I Wuz Rubbed!" Thomassen did a good job on the Pro Reviews, tho I believe the time would be better spent on say analyzing one or two specific stories in much greater detail, somewhat the way The Great Fog and World of A were reviewed by fans recently. Guess I'm running overtime, but I want to add that Dale Washburn has some good points in his letter. I remember back in high school I was discussing stf with my physics instructor. He lent me a copy of H.G. Wells' 7 Famous Novels which I read and enjoyed; but if it came to a choice between a steady diet of that style of writing and what we normally get in Ast. Stories, I'd take Ast. St. anytime. It seems that quite often the book stf is a little too stilted, and not quite as easy and relaxed as mag authors can be -- but this may be only my personal opinion. Al Lopez. Pooh Corner, Bingham, Maine In Re: Skylark of Space I just read volume 1, no. 5. Yikes! I wuz very upset! In the first place, I never read the story except for three or four of the first pages which gave me a sudden attack of nausea. This, of course, messed up the book so I couldn't read the rest of it which I wouldn't have anyway. Now -- there is probably quite a lot of misunderstanding about the Schneeman ILLUSTRATION. Per chance it did get pluralized in some advertisements, but that was unintentional. About two and a half years ago when the thing should have come out, I planned to have four interiors, but the cost of this prohibited same. Mr. Evans seems quite upset about the story content. Anyone in fandom should by this time know all about Dr. Smith's Skylark series. Apparently Mr. Evans didn't. Sorry, old boy. After all, I didn't write it, so why blame me? A thousand copies were sold and a second edition which will probably be ready in March or April is partly sold already. So apparently some people DID like the book. About the jacket, now: I didn't like it either, but something had to go around the book and in a hurry. I had about a week to get the jacket designed, printed, and on the book. So you see it was not entirely my fault, since I did my best in the time I had. There will, of course, be a new jacket printed for all those who dislike the present one. Just drop me a card and when the second printing comes out, I'll send you a new jacket. I hope you chaps will print this letter in your next ish, so that we can get the story pro and con. If Mr. Evans will return SOS, I shall send him his three dollars. By the way, Mr. Evans, have you read THE TIME STREAM? THE WEAPON MAKERS will be out in Feb. I've read this one, and I defy anyone to say it's not a good story. Well, I like it. So there! T.P. Hadley, 271 Doyle Ave., Providence 6, R.I. Some Rather Comprehensive Analyses Until #6 arrived I was beginning to fear that you had suspended, which I would have regarded as distinctly unfortunate, since I rate your baby very close to the top. However this shouldn't be interpreted as a plea for more frequent publication; I favor the principle of quality above quantity. Of the three issues I've seen I'm inclined to rate #5 a little the highest mainly I suppose on the strength of its meaty letter section. But they all have their good points -- and their bad. Plain covers suit me just as well as artified ones. I read for content -- and specifically for ideas and information rather than personalities and light entertainment. There seems to be a sharper contrast in the quality level of your different items -- as between pieces written on inspiration or with a definite point and purpose and those that are strictly fillers -- than in the general run of the fan publications I've read. I hope you will receive a more ade- page 18
