IT HAPPENED IN SPACE Adapted from the annals of the Space Patrol by James V. Taurasi A PLANETEER YARN "HOW MUCH longer before we arrive?" asked The Asteroid, frome the galley. "In about two hours," answered The Planeteer, "Come here and hook up the search beam, you can fill your stomach later." "OK," muttered The Asteroid eating an egg sandwich. "OK, but a guy must eat you know..." He went over to the instrument board bad began tuning in the search beam. This was his own invention, one he had just completed. It enabled him to tune in and have a look at anyplace he wanted. Of course the distance was regulated by the power used and the machine was still not perfect. Most of the time it took hours to get the scene you wanted. "Lucky you found out about this gold shipment," muttered the Asteroid, while he adjusted the search ray, "$300,000,000 worth of gold will sure set Interplanetary back a bot. What gets me is how you found out that they were shipping the gold. How did you do that?" "That was plain luck," answered The Planeteer. "I was fooling around that machine of yours and hit the interior of the Treasury building with it. I saw gold bars being packed in crates marcked tea, and saw the name of the space liner on it, so I put 2 and 2 together and here we are on the way to get that gold." "Boy have I got something," shouted The Asteroid. "Look! I got the cabin of, Razig, the pirate." "Nuts, get the space liner, we'll bother with Razig some other time," answered The Planeteer. "Before you break a blood vessel come over here and listen to what they're saying. They're planning to rob that ship also." "What?" shouted The Planeteerm as he rushed over to the search ray machine and put on a set of earphones. There he heard the plans of the pirates to capture the liner's gold and important passengers. The passengers were to be held for ransom. "Ye Gods, how did he find out about that gold?" stormed The Planeteer. "Come on, lazy, get the position of that ship and lets get them out of the way, then we'll get the gold. There'll be hell to pay if he ever gets his hands on those passengers." "Right0, Boss," answered The Asteroid, as he sat down and began figuring where the pirate ship was. A few minutes later he gave his figures to The Planeteer. "That's as close as I can get them, he should be around there someplace." "OK, now check over our guns," ordered The Planeteer. Hours later they came upon the pirate ship, but the pirates had already found the liner and were tied up alongside, transferring the gold. "Not so good," muttered The Planeteer. "We can't risk a fight now, we might hurt some of the passengers on that liner. Mm-mmm, I have an idea. Get out all the small hand guns you can find and pack them together. Also, bring
