[1919] May 21, 1919 I.S.A., Camp Benning Dear Miss Williams: - Your letter of recent date offering me an Airedale makes me wish I had a home so I could accept it. The Army is not a good place for a dog at present, however, as those of us who are part of the permanent establishment are not leading a proper dog's life. For example, this morning we worked at field fortifications making pascines, gabions, sums, sandbag revetments, duck boards, and so forth until our (illegible) & shovels were not and our hands were blistered with the friction. This afternoon we went out on the range in a driving rain and fired sixty rounds of ammunition apiece in a problem in fire distribution. Then to night after an hour working out problems in the size of working parties etc. we went to the movies and saw a couple of reels of pictures to illustrate the proper procedure. Since receiving the suggestion from you about the Flanders Fields I have made some attempt to carry out your suggestion. My chief difficulty lies in convincing myself that the torch has really been grasped and is being carried by a large enough number to insure that it may go on safely.
