30 BURLINGTON SCHOOLS AND THE NEGRO PUPIL The study of Burlington schools is based upon replies from 179 public and parochial school teachers. Included in this number are four principals who filled out the teacher form, but who will not be distinguished from the teachers in the analysis of data. In a breakdown of the coverage, the present study included 121 public school teachers and 23 parochial, with thirty-five who failed to identify the system to which they belonged.^1 The public school sample represents 61 percent of the public school teaching force, according to the figures taken from the Burlington Teachers Directory for 1949-50. Replies covered individuals in teaching assignments from kindergarten through the Junior College level. About half (51.4) percent) were at junior high, senior high, and Junior college posts. ^2 Approximately a third of the teachers (36 percent) were teaching all grade subjects. However among teachers replying the various subject fields appear to be adequately covered. ^3 Responses concerning experience showed that approximately 15 percent of the teachers had been teaching less that five years, while 30 percent had had more than twenty years experience.
