51 County Home In the County Home the bed capacity was reported to be 180, with fifteen wards which included three hospital wards. The bed capacity of the wards was not given. In 1949 the county home accommodated 165 persons. One Negro lived there as a county charge during the year studied. No restrictions limit the availability of county home services to Negroes or any other minority group, and no complaints had been received regarding Negro patients there, according to the report from this institution. Blood Bank The Des Moines County Blood Bank was established in Burlington almost three years ago. The folder given to prospective recipients and donors stated that "acceptable white donors" are eligible to give blood to the bank, although it is the practice of the bank that when there is an anticipated blood need for a Negro patient, blood from Negro donors is requested prior to need. Blood from Negroes, then, is used for Negroes only. Blood from Negro donors has never been offered to other racial groups. Des Moines County Health Center Services rendered by the County Health Center include public health nursing, sanitation, maternal child health, school health, and control of communicable diseases. All services of the center are reported available to all persons regardless of race. Approximately 5 per cent of the services of this institution were given to Negroes during 1949.
