3. Our city's self respect is in direct proportion to the dignity and self-respect of its individual citizens. Next came an exploratory stage when we wrote to many national organizations and other communities asking their recommendations for someone to help us. The replies were unanimous: "Get Dr. Long at Fisk University. They're tops down there." [was their gr???] We did. And how right they are! Next the facts were gathered under the guidance of Dr. Long and five local committees on health, housing, education, employment and public accommodations. [Statement hurts me a bit so brief! took a year!] These facts were sent to Fisk. The material was then returned to us in the form of a statistical report. The local committees, then, after extensive discussion, put these facts and their interpretation into final form. By this time over 800 people had, in one way or another, become involved in the Survey. In offering these facts to the public, the Survey committee said, "Here is a home-grown report of our own community about practices which Burlingtonians themselves have reported.
