8. have occurred which, while they have not been sufficiently wide-spread to have changed the basic employment pattern, are still significant as precedents; the first Negro inspector in industry, the first -- and second -- Negro office workers in the leading department store, the first two Negro store clerks (in dress and hat shops), the first Negro employee at the telephone office. The Superintendent of public schools has announced his willingness, for the first time, to hire Negro teachers. The Negro bailiff, appointed to the Municipal Court before the Survey began, has since been elected and re-elected to that post by huge majorities. [He is our first Negro elected official.] This, in turn, has naturally influenced the practices of the minority. As they feel welcome in the community on an equal level with other citizens, Negroes are taking a greater part in community activities through membership in such as the American Legion, the Council of Church Women and the League of Women Voters. A Negro friend who had been asked to help with the Community Chest drive [called me this fall] she had covered a largely white territory with success. She was very excited over both the cordial response she had experience and the fact that she had been asked to be worker for the first time. I suppose I should resist the temptation to point out the irony as well as the moral of this simple anecdote. These are certainly not very spectacular events, are they?
