AMA Colleges Not all our work in higher education is carried on through the Division of Christian Education. Among our most interesting and fruitful ministries are the Negro colleges of the AMA. No better testimonial to the accomplishments of our Negro colleges exists than their living alumni, at work throughout the nation is positions of leadership. The American Missionary Association founded more than 500 schools and colleges. Six fully accredited colleges are still related to us through the AMA Division - Dillard University, Fisk University, Huston-Tilotson College, LeMoyne College. Talladega College, and Tougaloo College. One is distinctly in an affiliated relationship; two are sponsored jointly with The Methodist Church. Plans have just been completed for the consolidation of our interests at Tougaloo College in Mississippi with those of the Disciples of Christ. Consolidation of our educational concern with the Methodists and Disciples is truly representative of ecumenical Christianity in action at the grass roots. Our Negro colleges must prepare for th day brought immeasurably closer by the historic Supreme Court anti-segregation decisions of May 17, when their role will change and they no longer will operate as racial colleges. "In a racially integrated society, no institution, educational or otherwise, can justify its existence except on the basis of quality of its services"... declared Dr. M. S. Davage, President of Huston-Tillotson College in his speech at the last Midwinter Meetings... "when integration comes the strongest of the existing private colleges now labelled Negro colleges will survive." In the continuing and vital job of assisting in the guidance of the young generation that will renew the church our Christian Education Division and AMA institutions report for this biennium - "Mission Accomplished!" (Left page, top) Young peoples "Work Day for Christ" (Center) Orientation lecture to prepare work campers for group leadership. (Bottom) The Pilgrim Circuit Rider station wagon takes the fellowship of our denomination to remote churches, visiting sixty churches in nine states in its first nine weeks of operation. (Right page, top) Commencement procession at an AMA Negro College (Center) The Men' Dormitory Building on another campus. (Bottom) A young man who will be prepared for the wider opportunities opening up to his generation.
