CLAIMED BY LISA EISCHENS RUST, IOWA & LEMOYNE OLD CAPTIOL - IOWA CITY, IOWA Dear Colleague, Pictures, posters, and new stories have recently been explaining the scope of RILEEH--Rust, Iowa, LeMoyne for Expanding Educational Horizons--to the University Community. In a word, RILEEH is a formal offer on the University's part to join its resources to the needs and aspirations of two predominately Negro colleges in the South. The University's offer to Rust College and LeMoyne College constitutes an invitation to each member of the academic community, students and staff as well as faculty, to contribute his time and talent whenever or wherever he feels moved. RILEEH is a volunteer endeavor whose success depends entirely on our willingness to staff and finance its most urgent programs. It is hoped that federal money under the Higher Education Act will ultimately expand and complete what local initiative begins. One of these programs is the second Rust College Summer Student Project. A student from last summer's program Dorothy Pennington, is pictured above with the four children of Dr. and Mrs. David Funk of the College of Medicine. Miss Pennington lived with the Funks while she attended specially arranged and voluntarily taught accelerated classes in basic skills last summer. She is now a senior at Rust. This summer, 25 to 35 students from Holly Springs will be invited to Iowa to live with private families, attend classes, and to participate in the social and cultural life of Iowa City. Would you like to participate in this or other RILEEH projects? If so, kindly check the enclosed questionnaire and return, via mail, to Dean Philip Hubbard, Old Capitol. Thank You, [Signed Thomas Hanson] Tom Hanson President, Student Senate [Signed Gene Spaziani] Gene Spaziani Assoc. Prof., Zoology Co-Chairmen, RILEEH Steering Committee
