Our purpose is to help draw out and develop the child's potential: his capacities to know and love. Our direction is away from the product-oriented child: children must be secure in what they are because they are." HEAD START C/O Hawkeye Area Community Action Program 221 So: Linn Iowa City 338-3696 Families within the OEO poverty guidelines may have their children enrolled in this program when space is available. In Iowa City there are two full day groups and one half day group. In Hills there is one half day group. FREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL This community has children beyond the day care stage now. They are getting "stuck" into public schools, much to everyone's dismay. A free school is our next most urgent problem. We would like to do whatever possible to facilitate its inception. Women's Liberation WOMEN'S CENTER 3 East Market 353-6265; 353-6266 8:30 a.m.-10 p.m. (eventually open 24 hours) The Center is composed of ongoing groups which perform or are organizing specific services. New areas are constantly opening up. The Center welcomes new people with program ideas. "The Women's Center is a place to talk with other women, a place to be alone, a place to organize constructive social action, a place to come when you need a service." Some activities at the Center include: Information Bureau (speakers, newsletter); Abortion Referral Service; Birth Control Information; Skills Courses (auto mechanics, general financing, self-defence); Free store; Women's Health Information Project (will do speaking to women's groups); 24 hour crisis lin; gay consciousness raising; Class Action and Consciousness Raising Group (working with welfare rights now and ADC mothers); Day Care Council, HEW Group (currently studying sex discrimination in the University); and Women's Studies (working on getting women's courses for credit).
