The usual procedure is to fill out an application, have an interview with one of the people at teh office, and then, when a suitable job is available, you are referred to the department wanting an employee. However, like most employment agencies, there is a lot of run around. You can wait hours in the office for th them to tell you there are no jobs avilable. If possible, it is a good idea, after applying at personnel, to try to talk to as many people as you know and ask if they know of any job openings. When you hear of one, you can go directly to the department yourself, and talk to the people there. UNIVERSITY WORK STUDY PROGRAM Old Dental Bldg. 103 353-4811 8:30 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.; 1:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Available to full time students with need of $300 or more. Salary is set by type of job, student educational background, and length of time student will work. Since this is a funded program, the UI. S. government pays 80%, and the employer and FICA pay the other 20%. As of June 1972 the applicant must also file with the financial aid office, and must have a parent confidential statement or a student confidential statement if the student is self supporting. Apply by April 15, 1972 for summer and fall work. Be pleasantly persistent when applying, and push to see one of the interviewers if you ever want any money. OPERATION MAINSTREAM HACAP 221 So. Linn St. Iowa City 338-3696 Work training and retraining to help people get back into the work force. The federal government has given HACAP money to do this. The government pays for people to work as trainees in the areas of community health, beautification, development and environmental control. PART TIME UNIVERSITY EMPLOYMENT Office of Financial Aids 106 Old Dental Bldg. 353-3085 8:30 to 12; 1 to 4:30 weekdays Students only. CAREER OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM Joint County School System Cedar Rapids, Iowa William Davis, Director For low income residents and Viet Nam returnees. Enrollees work as aides in classrooms while going to the University. The program pays all eduational expenses. No high school diploma is required. GOODWILL INDUSTRIES 1410 1st Ave. Iowa City 337-4158 For any handicapped person 16 or over who wants job training and employment. IOWA STATE EMPLOYMENT SERVICE 22 East Court St. Iowa City 351-1035 Employment counseling and placement; aid to the disadvantaged, school drop-outs, prison releases, and veterans. Clear insight into job possibilities within the system. NEIGHBORHOOD YOUTH CORPS 700 So. Dubuque St. Iowa City 338-3696 Low-income youth who want pre-vocational work experience but are full time students (14-21) or school drop-outs 16-17. Provides jobs in non-profit organizations. PAGE 6
