PENAL DIGEST INTERNATIONAL A newspaper published from Iowa City which does an amazingly good job of keeping track of what's going on within the American (and sometimes foreign) penal system. There are articles reprinted from prison newspapers and magazines, reports from individuals doing time and articles by psychologists and others who are informed about prisons. The editor, Joe Grant, also helped establish the only ex-convict run half-way house in the country. BAIL BOND FUND Bail Bonding agencies charge a great deal for their services (not just interest on borrowed money), and require substantial security. You may well do best by soliciting the advice and assistance of your attorney with regard to decisions on procuring bail money. PROJECT HOPE P.O. Helps the ex-convict readjust to life in the community by aiding him in a search for a job, and making him aware of the resources available. They make regular visits to the county jail. The guild is an association of judicial legal workers, lawyers and law students. The existence of this chapter in Iowa City provides a unique opportunity to combat elitist professional mystification within the University of Iowa Law School. They are exploring alternative modes of practicing law, substituting progressive roles for the profit motive while giving service to persons charged with misconduct in University disciplinary proceedings. The guild helps prepare defence, negiotates with the provost office, and appears at the hearing. IOWA CITY CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION Burns Weston 725 E. College 338-3066 Organizations dedicated to the protection of civil liberties. They often provide legal service for cases of importance in this area. PEOPLE'S LAW OFFICE 300 Whetstone Bldg. Fee is based on minimum fees established by bar association, but will help those who can't pay full cost.
