REGULATIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATE WOMEN Success in community living is based on the understanding and observance of its codes of conduct. When a group of people govern themselves they are faced with a dual responsibility. They must decide what regulations are necessary and/or desirable to preserve and protect the welfare of the group and its individual members and they must assure that the rules which they have set up are observed. The Associated Women Students, therefore, provides these minimum regulations for which each undergraduate woman is personally responsible. The following regulations apply to all undergraduate women who are not participating in the Privileged Hours Program. I. CLOSING HOURS FOR STUDENT RESIDENCES A. Regular Hours 1. Sunday through Thursday..12:00 midnight 2. Friday and Saturday..1:00 a.m. 3. Hours are maintained throughout the regular academic sessions. B. Exceptions 1. Registration Periods: a. First Semester Wednesday and Thursday, September 18 and 19, 1968...1:00 a.m. b. Second Semester, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, February 2, 3, an 4, 1969...1:00 a.m. c. Summer Session, Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and 17, 1969...1:00 a.m. 2. Homecoming Weekend-Friday and Saturday, October 11 and 12, 1968...2:00 a.m. 3. Evenings prior to University Vacations as follows: a. Thanksgiving, Tuesday, November 26, 1968...1:00 a.m. b. Winter Break, Friday, December 20, 1968...1:00 a.m. c. Spring Break, Thursday, April 3, 1969...1:00 a.m. 4. Evenings before "Mercy Day" and throughout Final Examination Week beginning: First Semester-Thursday, January 23, 1969...1:00 a.m. Second Semester-Saturday, May 24, 1969...1:00 a.m. {Handwritten note: In case you have any without privledges hours they must follow these rules} II. SIGN-OUT PROCEDURES A. Overnight sign-outs may be obtained for weekends ONLY according to the following procedure: 1. Sign-outs may be obtained from the designated Staff Member* in each housing unit. 2. Sign-outs must be canceled immediately if there is a change in plans. 3. Students may leave their residences after 6:00 a.m. 4. Students must sign in immediately upon return to their residences. 5. {This number circled} If a student neglects to sign-out or wishes to extend her sign-out, she should immediately phone the designated Staff Member in her housing unit. 6. {This number is circled} Overnight sign-outs in Iowa City are normally limited to University-approved housing. 7. {This number is circled} Travel: Students who must leave or return after closing hours because of unavoidable travel circumstances are asked to contact the designated Staff Member IN ADVANCE of the trip. B. Lateness 1. {This number is circled} Students who find they cannot return to their residences before closing hours should call the designated Staff Member in their housing unit indicating the time of return. 2. Students returning after regular closing hours must sign Late Slips. Rules applying to ALL undergraduate women living in Approved Housing: I. GUESTS A. General 1. The hostess is responsible for her guests. 2. Guests are to abide by University and residence policies. 3. Guests are to leave fifteen minutes before closing hours: Sunday through Thursday..11:45 p.m. Friday and Saturday...12:45 a.m. ____ * Staff Member is an all-inclusive term applying to Head Resident, Resident Adviser, Housemother, or Householder. B. Men guests are entertained in the public areas of a residence unless previous arrangements have been made for an Open House or Visitation. C. Overnight guests 1. All guests must be registered in the residence. {Hand written: Change} 2. Non-university guests have the same hours as their hostess. {|Hand written: Change} 3. After regular closing hours, guests of Privileged Hours students must enter the housing unit with their hostess. 4. Guest fee policies of the residence apply to all guests. II. SERENADE POLICY A. The designated Staff Member must be notified IN ADVANCE of all serenades. B. Students remain inside housing unit for an after-hours serenade. Exception: The student being pinned may go outside during the first half hour after closing hours. C. Serenades should end within one hour after closing hours. The PRIVILEGED HOURS PROGRAM is one in which the participant assumes personal responsibility for the regulation of her own hours. The following apply to all undergraduate women who wish to request privileged hours. I. ELIGIBILITY A. To participate a student must have completed [underline]28[/underline] semester hours and/or be twenty-one years of age during the semester. [underline]Sophomores under twenty-one years of age must have parental permission. [/underline] B. Second semester Freshman who have completed 12 or more semester hours may request privileged hours for Friday and Saturday nights with parental permission. C. All participants must attend a required Orientation Meeting. D. Orientation Meetings 1. Required attendance a. All undergraduate students with the above qualifications who have not previously applied for their privileged hours or who have changed residences must attend and Orientation Meeting.
