page 6. One point concerning feminine fan activity that may be bothering some, might be worth considering at this time. There seems to be an idea prevalent that "no lady reads that stuff". Well, the "lady" part may be right -- but that does not exclude those who are "real women". One needn't be a tomboy, or an undeveloped teen-ager to enjoy science and fantasy fiction and the related fan activity. The Galactic Roamers may not be a typical fan group, being somewhat older than average group. But we have an author's wife who is over forty, and her two daughters who are in their early twenties. There is the wife of an Osteopath, and the wife of an Insurance agent. They are both under twenty-five. Overcoming my natural reticence,I'll break down and admit that I have a daughter who is fourteen, and that I am thirty-two. Please don't hold back because of some notion that it "isn't the thing to do". You are prefectly welcome and you will feel entirely at home with a bunch of fans, whether are twelve or a hundred andtwelve. Another thing worth thinking about is John W. Campbell's editprial in the June Astounding. It seems to me that he gives a logical and clear-cut reason for women reading science fiction. S-F is no longer a bunch of far-fetched fantastic ideas. Instead, it deals with things that may soon affect us in our everyday lives. Scarcely a day passes but something is mentioned in the newspapers that is new and strange to the average person, but is commonplace to us who read science fiction. The changes we may expect after the war will make the problem of adaptation difficult for the ordinary citizen. But we who are accustomed to taking new ideas and startling concepts in our stride, will have an enormous advantage over those who have never thought to look farther ahead than the ends of their respective noses. In this new world that is shaping up, there is a place waiting for us. Let's be ready for it. Let's do our practicing now. Come on gals, let's go places. 6969696969696969696969696969696969696969696969696969696969696969696 MOTION IN PERPETUUM The impossible has at last yielded to the efforts of implacable science. The problem which has intrigued but thwarted inventors from the earliest beginnings of scientific endeavor, has at long last been solved. The solution is simple and easy to grasp. Mathematics has triumphed again. In the diagram at the left, you wil observe a wheel. At the end of each of the spokes is a disc. On each disc is the numeral 6. As the wheel turns the 6 is changed to a 9. Obviously the descending 9 is greater than the ascending 6. Thus it is readily apparent that the machine will go on, and on, even as Columbus' sail boat.
