Dept.s of the Interior GREEK GIFT HORSE DEPT: Keeping in mind the honor of the press and all that, we are extremely reluctant to mention names, so we shall merely say that our favorite west-coast spy, a Mr X, informs us that some wag mailed a razor blade, a cold, naked blade, to the editor of a newly-sprouted Washington (state) fanzine. There was no accompanying message. Mr X tells us the editor in mention does not shave. Why, we wonder in mystification, was the lade mailed then? OTHER HORSES DEPT: The incident above recalls to mind two other gifts anonymously mailed to unappreciating fans. Some irresponsible urchin once mailed a child's spelling book to Jimmy Taurasi. And another lad (filled yo overflowing with Yuletide cheer) sent Willie Sykora a Xmas card. Mr Sykora was lacking in appreciation. He posted a reward asking for identification of the sender. It was never collected. Ah, what ghouls these fans be! EYEBROW RAISER DEPT: T'other day we received a copy of the new Chicago fanzine, Science Fiction Jr, and found to our amazement that we couldn't even begin to consider ourselves finished fans. We simply didn't read the proper prosiness, and those we did read were the wrong ones. A column by a mysterious gent who calls himself "Ele-ment" set us aright. "Ele-ment" rates the prosiness, past and present, for our edification. AMAZING, FANTASTIC ADV., THRILLING WONDER and UNCANNY, we learn, are "essential for all fans to read." On the other hand, COSMIC and STIRRING SCIENCE are for only the greenest of beginners. While our dear ol friend of the galloping spaceways, CAPT FUTURE, is strictly for "outlandish veterans." Over in France, "Ele-ment" tells us, they have a publication entitled AIR TRAILS "(or something similar ---- essential for Frenchmen fans.)" Pardon us please while we burst an essential rib in appreciation. It is to be hoped "Ele-ment" re-enters his hole soon and refuses to emerge until next ground-hog day. THE BAFFLING CASE OF THE PERAMBULATING YEARBOOK (dept): Back in 1938 we got out the first prozine index -- the Science, Weird & Fantasy Fiction Yearbook of 1938 was the whole title. The darned thing ex-ceeded our wildest expectations by selling out -- and we printed a second edition for that year. The next year, 1939, we printed just over 200 copies so reprinting wouldn't be necessary. At this writing we have just 19 copies left. In 1940 we passed the buck, despite the popularity of the publication, to Brady & Kuntz of Los Angeles. This year the same book is being passed on: the 1941 Yearbook is being published by Larry Shaw (1301 State St., Schenectady, NY.) and Bill Evans (143 N. High st., Salem, Oregon.) Yes chum, you guessed it -- this is a (deserved) plug. For benefit of fans who have boarded the bandwagon late, the Yearbook is a complete index to all the prozines published each year, both home and abroad. It should complete your collection of prozines. Lez-ettes chapter 1: Super-man chapter 2: Super-woman chapter 3: Runt chapter 1: Planet chapter 2: Ice-age chapter 3: Brrrr! chapter 1: North Pole chapter 2: South Pole chapter 3: No clothes-line chapter 1: Saturn chapter 2: 3 Rings chapter 3: Freaks, too!
