The initial purpose of the House was threefold: 1. To provide a definite location in the University community for Black students to gather in a social atmosphere reflecting the interests of Black Students 2. To provide a cultural center reflecting the Black experience for the cultural expression and cultural enrichment of Black students and the University community. 3. To provide an area for academic development of students. During the early stages of the House, the major purpose catered to was the provision of a social atmosphere. Brothers and sisters spent many long hours partying at the House and exchanging ideas about Black people. However, as the House matured and the effect of its newness wore off, the staff was able to realize the second purpose and provide a cultural center reflecting the Black experience of the students as it related to Black America. Today the House is able to realize all three purposes, providing an academic, cultural and social atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and community. The House is the definite location in which Blacks can share and learn about out culture. [collage to right]
