The history of the House has been characterized by growth and development of programming and services. From a beginning of being a place where students could meet and exchange cultural ideas, to its present status of initiating programs which not only help students develop and learn about the Black culture, but also help Blacks in an academic capacity, the House has shown that it is a viable part of the academic atmosphere present at the University. Also, it has proved to be a strong cultural foundation for the Black students and University community. The House's move toward a more positive position in the University's academic and social atmosphere can only be characterized by the development and need for togetherness shown by Black students on campus. Just as the times have changed from riotous 1960's to the progressive 1970's so have the students themselves. However, the desire to learn ore about the Black culture survives. Because of this desire, students, faculty , staff and the community still view the Afro-American Cultural Center as an intricate and viable part of The University of Iowa.
