[handwritten] AACCAfro-American Student Assoication 7-29-71 Afro Center To Relocate Near Hillcrest The Afro-American Cultural Center of The University of Iowa is relocating this summer, crossing the Iowa River from its 3 East Market house to the building vacated by the Institute of Gerontology. Phillip E. Jones, director of Special Support Services, which supervises the Center , said the new location will house a reading-room, recreation facilities and the office of the Black Student Union. The Center (AACC) will compile a list of Afro-American references in the library at the School of Music, and will make a collection of audio tapes influenced by Afro-American traditions. The AACC is making plans to continue its "Directions in Black Music" performances, started this summer, during the 1971-1972 academic year. In addition to jazz, the series may branch out into blues, folk and opera influenced by Afro-American music, Jones said. The new AACC is on the west of the river near Hillcrest Residence Hall, at the end of the footbridge crossing Riverside Drive at Iowa Avenue. Jones said plans are also in progress for establishing a Chicano-Indian Center on campus . Centers for international students in the honors program are traditional facilities at the U of I.
