[handwritten] [DEC. 1968] 17th Century Revisited In 'Marriage a la Mode' Director Peter D. Arnott has brought 17th Century John Dryden to 20th Century Iowa City and the two of them, doing well together, make a fin-filled evening. The University of Iowa Theater's production of Dryden's "Marriage a la Mode" opened Thursday night to a crowd of first-nighters that laughed loudly and snickered softly through the performance. Palamede, played by George Faunce, and Rhodophil, played by David Brockway, tumble the amusingly blatant lines across the stage from the beginning with added impetus from Doralice, Rhodophil's wife played by Donna Deaner, and Melantha, Palamede's intended played by Lorna Tracey. The Prince, Leonidas, played by James White, and Palmyra, Adrienne Maloney, give balance to the play with their performances of innocent love beset with villianous traps. Costuming, done by Barbara Davidson, blends colors to match the characters and the play itself. She worked under the supervision of Margaret Hall. The lighting was done by Louis Lager under the supervision of David Thayer. A. S. Gillette designed scenery. Construction was done by Joy Armstrong, shop foreman. The play will run through Saturday and from Dec. 9 through 14 at the University Theater.
