Fantasy Fiction Field Illustrated News Weekly (Denvention Issue) Page 9 the poll eat ART WIDNER, JR. Born Philadelphia, 9/16/17. I would not have gone there except that I wanted to be near my mother at such a trying time. School -- Baltimore, Syracuse, Boston, Mattapan, Quincy. No college. First promag Nov 28 Amazing. No cash so didn't start steady reading until May 1934, meanwhile absorbing Verne and Wells, Poe, Burroughs, etc. First famnag Dec 34 Fantasy. First fan article "Care and Feeding of Werewolves", slated for Amateur Correspondent which promptly folded. CAFOW finally appeared (or tried to in spite of Doc Lowndes hectoing) in a late 39 Vombiteur. Firs correspondent, Doc Lowndes (he was then in CCC, Flagstaff, Maine). Briefly connected with GGClarh's Brooklyn Reporter in 35. No activity except correspondence in 36 and 37 while in CCC myself. Started subbing to fanmags 38 and 39, & finally organized Stranger Club in Feb. 40. Revived Fanfare in June. Attended Chicon, Philco 40. Took over Fanfare alone. Joined FAPA and Frontier Society. Put on Boskone Feb 41. Latest activity: articles here and there -- organization of NFFF, editing the first issue of Bonfire, Yhos (latter 4 Fapa) and promag poll. Plans: attendance at Denvention, psychological research in fan field, Poll Cat, and Stinky. Backing Washington for 1942. Will plug fantasy in Napa, start reading pros again, and maybe churn out some rejection fodder, if I get time. Not trying to offer Tigor, Moskowitz, or Saari competition for "most perfectly developed fan" but twas the only negative I could find. * Not Unknown is Campbell -- cont. four or five months, all depending on how it fits; length is about 112,000 words. Unknown, as has been announced, will become Unknown Worlds with the October issue. Robert A. Heinlein is busy on the sequel to "Universe". * A MAN AND A MOUSE Hannes Bok Since Bok is such a modest person - and so reticent with details upon his past, we'll have to fill in space with what we know about him. Hannes is almost himself like a Walt Disney creation, for his moods change as rapidly as do those of Mickey Mouse and are as dtetectable to the onlooker. When he's gay, there's no restraining him -- when he's blue, Greta Garbo croaking -- "Gloomy Sunday" could not be more deconsolate. He works slowly and carefully. And we might add, he's superstitious about it all. One thing you must learn when you meet Bok is that it is strictly verboten to look at an unfinished drawing, or a preliminary sketch done before actualart is started. That, he will tell you, is a sure guarantee that the finished product will be crummy. He's generous and expansive. Toomuch so for his own good. He goes ga-ga over Maxwell Parrish (hope I've spelled the name rightly) loves music, the ballet & limericks. He's always trying to compose the latter. He's often used himself as a model -- examples can be found in his drawing for "Mr Packer Goes to Hell" (the large face is Bok) the May Weird Tales cover (the hands) and others I forget at present. & he uses a little sketch of a mouse for his signature.
