MRS. EDITH BANKS of the National Association for the Advancement of Rich People. The rich is this country are fast becoming an oppressed minority. We are leered at, sneered at, called "rich honky,"...we are called "bourgoisie," and that is the works injustice of all, because it means " city dweller," and most of us live as far from the inner city as possible. Besides, we're not even home for half the year: We spend out summers on the Islands and winter in the Alps. My dear people! The gas crisis has hit us twice as hard as it has hit the lower classes. Not only do we have more automobiles per person, but many of us have had to give up our limousines and become accustomed to cramming ourselves into the new smaller models. The poor, on the other hand, are already used to being crammed from living in overcrowded slum housing all their lives. And, besides, the poor can always bus it. Have you ever tried to catch a bus in Beverly Hills? Impossible! And then, there's Cleveland Amory and all those leaf-licking animal-lovers. How long will it be before they deprive us of our seal skins and Persian lamb coats? Why, these articles are as important to our identity as native dress is to any ethnic group. On the brighter side--the Reagan side...(ha ha)--I was very heartened to learn the average annual income of the delegates at the Republican Convention this year was $47,000, well within the upper strata of lower middle class. I'm very happy to know that the future of our country rests in such distinguished genteel hands. Poverty is so tasteless! As performed on the street at the Republican Convention, 1980
