The Fantasy Amateur 7 III Mar 1944 Official Organ of the Fantasy Amateur Press Association Officers of the FAPA: President: Al Ashley Vice President: L R Chauvenet Sec'y Treas: Norman F Stanley Official Editor: R D Swisher ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Larry Shaw's Message: Why not make the official editor the official critic also? That is, let him use the FA's pages for brief reviews if he so wishes, but do not hold him to the job if he doesn't. In my case, when I'm o.e. in '44 (harrumph!), I'll willingly pay half or more of the cost of the pages I use for this purpose, since it'll allow me to cut down on stuff published elsewhere. The assistant critic can be dispensed with. Love, Larry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- President's Message: Regarding the FAPA emblem mentioned in my last message, I received two replies by letter. There may be more mention of this in various mags in this mailing, but so far there appears to be no great urge for a new one. Furthermore, Wollheim informs me that two engravings of the original emblem were made (financed by him) and only one of them was turned over to the organization (to be subsequently lost). Wollheim says, "To design a new cut is to damage tradition and connections with FAPA's roots--which at this stage should still be strenghened--though the club is oldest of fandom--it's still damn young." There is much to be said for this viewpoint, and as the original is till available after all, it may prove best to retain it. So, providing there is any great desire for a new emblem, it will be up to those wishing it to take the usual steps to bring the matter to a membership vote. Unless something is done in this connection, I shall take the necessary steps to offer in the next FA the various ways our emlben can be used, and the cost of each method. At least, if we have an emblem we ought to use it-- something nobody has done for the last couple years. My suggestions anent again raising the membership limits have brought more ojections than anything else--even though we now have a sizeable waiting list of likely-looking applicants. Unless the situation changes, I shall drop that idea for now. Vice President Chauvenet, who becomes Chairman of the Laureate Committee, has suggested that I appoint the other two members now, and that it might be advisable to merge the Critics' and Laureate reports. This would make possible Laureate Awards for each mailing, with Grand Awards at the end of the year. I have appointed Speer and Russell, pending their acceptance, and am leaving the working out of the details of the merger to them. It is to be hoped that we can estalish a precedent in this respect that will be followed by succeeding Presidents. Chauvenet further suggested that our bulging treasury be drawn upon for some substantial form of award. Whether or not this is advisable, and whether the awards should be practical in the way of
