16 FANFARE UNITE OR FIE! officers selected by progressive balloting, unless certain candidates receive a clear majority on the first ballot. There should be a president, a vice-president -- to be more of an active assistant than the usual v.p. -- a secretary-treasurer, and an advisory board of ten to act as a sort of supreme court of fandom on questionable decisions and acts of other officers or members. It is to be admitted, that carrying on all this by correspondence will be a tremendous difficulty, but knowing the unbounded enerby of all active fans, I believe it can be accomplished, and that the end will be worthwhile. As to activities, Joe Gilbert offers a good many suggestions in his recent guest editorial in #113 Fantasy News, and doubtless many more could be thought of by other fans, but the main purpose of the FANTASY FAN FEDERATION would be itself, the unified voice of fandom, speaking through responsible officers, to gain the respect and attention of the outside world. A democratic organization that accomplished things, and behaved itself in an adult fashion, would attract a great number of new members, who would be otherwise puzzled or disgusted with the present disorganized, slap-happy state of fandom. We would gain adults, valuable assets to any organization, and we would set a good example for the younger fans just entering the field, so that when they grew up, they would remain and strengthen the field, instead of drifting off, as so many do. We could expand to a thousand or more during the next decade, as we are not as unique as many of us like egotistically to believe. Fans are bright people, but there are a good many more bright who are not fans. Many of these are "potential" fans, however, if they could be shown that fans are a lot brighter than they appear on the surface. -finis- ****************************************************** Wanna try a DIFFERENT fanmag???
