STRANGE INTERLUDES NOT SO DUMB by Louis Russell Chauvenet on FANFARE. ***Cover. Lovely! I think it is the best piece of fan artwork I have ever seen - - clear, cold, and telling in its simplicity. A full 10 *** EDITORIAL. I believe that this would have run better as an article if the club members did not agree with it. The editorial should be an expression of common opinions, if FANFARE is to be a club organ, not Widner&Singleton's fanzine. On the whole, I agree with thesis. 7. ***OUTSIDE. Excellent until the anticlimactic paragraphs beginning with "That should...indicate what I mean"! As a whole, 6. Anyhow, it inspired the cover! ***CHANCE. The concept is excellent, the execution good--for fan verse, anyhow. 7 here. ***THIS ONE'S ON THE HOUSE. I have absolutely no interest in fine technical points about just who wrote certain third rate stories I have neither read nor intend to waste time reading. SaM's literary style does not help conquer this aversion. only 4 on this one. And awjr and es have a third guy who prefers Lovecraft to Binder--lrc! *** MAKINGS OF A MISOGYNIST. Has GIlbert a good idea of what a misogynist is? His remarks hardly go to show that he is a misogynist--he says, for example, that the fan circle needs more women in it! Say 5. *** UNITE OR FIE. I am whole heartedly and unequivocably behind the formation of a FANTASY FAN FEDERATION, and agree with the entire article. You may count on my active support; in fact, I intend to run for President, although of course my support for the enterprise will remain the same whether or not I ever hold office in the organization. 9. ***R.D. SWISHER-- Certainly a unique biography (if it is one!)--so much so that it rates an 8, even if it told me nothing about SW-- I didn't know already. *** POLL NEWS 7, although I had already seen it in LeZ. I get your point about the wider distribution of bigger polls, Art!*** Q and A Dept., 6. *** LOOKING OVER THE FANMAGS (Fanzines is the words I'm pluggin gin an effort to head off the unpleasant sounding fanags before it is too late). It is the best fanzine review column in fandom, Art, despite those efforts of yours to get out of writing it by calling us all dopes a sufficient number of times. We all realized it long before you did, anyway. 7. ***STRANGE INTERLUDES. Remarkable is the Strange Innertuves heading on page 25, especially since the letters there aren't tiresome at ...I wrote Dale Hart post-haste (but Dale Hart is the wrong Dale, Russell; Tarr is the one who was shooting off his typewriter about chess. There is somewhat of a considerable difference between the two, and I, for one, am surprised that you don't know it. --es), and hope to have a chess match with his prodigies underway pretty soon. Make your side-bets with Dale--I'll do my best to justify your faith in me. If Rajocs wants to, he can send me a birthday card next Feb. 12--I'll be 21, (and not a draftee!) SI better, gets a 7 this time. *** LAST MINUTE DEPARTMENT. Amusing. I refuse to make ratings on a 0-100 scale. For one thing, while there is a clear difference to me between giving an article or item 6 and giving it 7, there would be no difference between rating it 66 and 67, 68 or 69. Moreover, to one long taught to regard and 0 as about the lowest mark which is acceptable (in high-school, college) and not deplorable, there is an irresistible tendency to start moving everything up the scale (maybe you aren't so dumb!). Finally, it would be too confusing, when I rate all my other fanzines on Harry's 0-10 system. If you want to chuck an extra zero on my ratings, well, that's your affair! *** Incidentally, I observe an interesting optic phenomenon--after reading 20
