NEWS WHILE IT'S HOT! FANTASY-NEWS the science fiction weekly newspaper PRICE: THREE ISSUES TEN CENTS. VOLUME 6 NUMBER 6 SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1941 WHOLE NUMBER 137 'COMET' TO AWARD DENVENTION CASH & SILVER MEDAL STFAN WHO OVERCOMES GREATEST HANDICAP TO GET THERE WILL WIN PRIZES. COMET, Orlin Tremaine's new science fiction magazine, is giving a sterling silver medal and twenty-five dollars in cash to the person who overcomes the greatest handicap in order to attend the DENVER SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION, July 4th, 5th, and 6th, 1941. The award will be made at the last session of the convention so that the winner can go home in style! This award is sponsored by COMET because the magazine believes that a science fiction gathering of this sort fosters closer aquaintances than can be developed by correspondence, because this movement can result in advancement of mutual interest and better understanding, and feels that the suport of these affairs should be wholehearted and the attendance large. The Denver Convention will be the third of its kind ever held. The First World Convention was in New York City on July 2, 3, and 4, 1939, the second was held in Chicago on Labor Day of 1940. Approximately 200 attended the first gathering and approximately 100 attended the second. The rules under which the COMET AWARD will be made are published in full in the May issue, out the latter part of March. COSMIC TALES OUT SOON-TAURASI! With a hitherto unpublished Lovecraft yarn, a sequel to "World of Singing Crystals," by Gardner, and a fan yarn by Moskowitz, [OT?] is a hit. STIRRING FACTS by Robert E. Warren Jr. The appearance of STIRRING SCIENCE and COSMIC STORIES on the newsstands provides us with an avalanch of facts. The printers are the same that printed SCIENCE and FUTURE FICTION in 1939...In STIRRING SCIENCE for February we find "Golden Nemesis" by David A. Kyle which was originally accepted by the old Gernsback WONDER, but the mag folded before the yarn could be published. The drawing in SS, accredited to Kyle, is an artistic plagiarism, being practically a traced copy of the illustration in Kyle's possession which was originally drawn by artist Winter years ago..."Always Comes Evening", the poem by Robert E. Howard, appeared first in the Aug 1936 issue of Wollheim's fan magazine, "The Phantagraph... "The Coming of the White Worm", scheduled for the second ish of SS, has quite a history. It was to have been used, in fact was announced for, the never-completed sixth issue of Bill Crawford's semi-pro fan mag Marvel Tales. Later Farnsworth Wright accepted the yarn for WEIRD TALES and an outre drawing was completed for it by Hannes Bok. Both the story and the drawing were returned to their respective owners after Wright's dismissa... "The Devotee of Evil" by Clark Ashton Smith, in the current STIRRING, is reprinted from "The Double Shadow and Other Fantasies" a booklet published by the author years ago.
