Page Four FANTASY NEWS MORE ODD ITEMS by FN Reporters. Thomas S. Gardner, 31, well-known author and popular fan writer has an incurable penchant for learning. He is attending his fourth college now, and shows no sign of quitting despite the fact that he has had a good job waiting for him in Tennessee for many years. Many readers will remember a hilarious yarn by Harry Collier in the April 1935 issue of WONDER STORIES titled "A Suitor By Proxy". It has just been revealed that "Harry Collier is the pseudonym of Harry Walton, and the yarn is the first by that very popular author.Harry has sold a 5000 word short to THRILLING WONDER STORIES just recently. It has become common knowledge that ASTONISHING STORIES, the only 10¢ pro stf mag, is outselling its companion mag, SUPERSCIENCE STORIES. This may be the reason for the recent change of name of the latter to SUPERSCIENCE NOVELS. The mutual admiration society, known as The Cometeers had a meeting recently at the home of Jimmy Taurasi. The meeting was a sort of going away party for Jim. Present were Sam Moskowitz, John Giunta, and Taurasi. F. Orlin Tremain, honorary member, sent a telegram of good wishes. Part of the night was spent in teaching Giunta how to box. The sparring bout ended when Jimmy's bed disintegrated. FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES and FANTASTIC NOVELS will be combined into one magazine with the June '41 number. The new magazine will be titled FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES, contain 128 pages, and sell for 15¢. The last issue of FANTASTIC NOVELS will have this announcement. It will be dated April and will hit the N.Y. stands on Feb. 26. A. MERRITT IS WRITING A NEW FANTASY FOR FFM. FRANK R. PAUL WILL DO AN ILLUSTRATION FOR COSMIC TALES! Gernsback's new magazine FLIGHT has a picture of a rocket plane on the cover of the March number and an article by Willy Ley inside describing it. The item is a reprint (next column) [column break] SCIENTIFILMS by Mario Racic, Jr. PARAMOUNT has filmed a new horror thriller which should make the stfans chew their finger nails with glee. Titled "The Monster and the Girl", the film stars Paul Lukas and Robert Paige. Rod Cameron, scientist, implants the brain of a man into the body of a gorilla in this strange mystery-drama. Ellen Drew, as the sister of the dead man, whose brain the gorilla has, gives a compelling dramatic performance. Hugh Herbert, the zany comedian, is to star in UNIVERSAL'S "The Black Cat". This may be a remaki of the Edgar Allen Poe mystery. A 15 by 20-foot picture on a screen was shown successfully during RCA's theatre screen television demonstration for the Federal Communications Commission and the National Television System Committee, in the New Yorker Thatre recently. The images were excellent, as good in detail as most motion pictures and better in contrast than the big-sized television exhibited a while ago by the Scophony Company. The highlight of this live pickup show was an espionage play, "K-7", with multisonic sound, employing both studio sets and films. The sound effects during the aviation and bombing scenes were especially realistic and most thrilling. Another feature of the demonstration was the showing of pictures relayed by radio of scenes sent by NBC's mobile television unit at Camp Upton, 68 miles away. AND STILL MORE ITEMS by FN Reporters from P.M. the modern age newspaper. Every issue of this magazine contains some science fiction material. THREE FANTASY OR SCIENTIFILMS will be shown at the next meeting of the QUEENS SCIENCE FICTION LEAGUE on Sunday, February 16, 1941. There will be a full length feature, a comedy, and a cartoon comprising seven reels of stfilm fare. This meeting promises to be one of the most interesting ever had to date.
