"PALOS OF THE DOG STAR PACK" IN NEXT FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES DERLETH, QUINN, BLOCH IN SEP WEIRD FINLAY MAY DO NEXT PLANET COVER! The August issue of FAMOUS FANTASTIC MYSTERIES will contain A. Merritt's famous "The Metal Monster". This great science fiction novel will cop a cover by Virgil Finlay. The cover painting is said to be one of Finlay's best works. In a letter to Mary Gnaedinger Editor of FFM, A. Merritt writes: "I am glad you gave me the opportunity of revising "The Metal Monster" before re-printing it. I have never been satisfied with it. It has some of the best writing in it that I ever did, and some of the worst. It has long been a problem child. "Nor do I and never did, like the title, But it is too late to do anything about it. "I have condensed here, cut out redundancies, built up a point or two." Finlay will also do the inside illustrations for Merritt's yarn. The next, October, issue of FFM will feature J.U. Giesy's renowned "Palos Of the Dog Star Pack." Giesy's novel will cop a (nest col.) Finlay cover, and the inside illustrations will be by the matchless Frank R. Paul. *** The September issue of WEIRD TALES, on sale July 1st, will take its readers on a nerve-shattering adventure "Beyond the Threshold", where fantastic murders, ghosts, and ghost breakers guarantee an exciting and thrilling experience, genuinely weird from start to finish. August W. Derleth's 12,000 word novelet, "Beyond the Threshold" will cop a Margaret Brundage cover. A creature of the wind, grotesque head high among the stars, alluring thousands of human feet up, up beyond space, "beyond the threshold" of human ken. The present yarn is the third of a series, the first of which was "The Return of Hastor" and the second "Sandwind Compact". D. Quick will have an 8000 word fantasy called "The Lost Gods", about a reincarnated Aztec deity. It will be illustrated by Hannes Bok. "Birthmark", the story of a freak will be Seabury Quinn's contribution to the issue. Robert Bloch will have a yarn in a lighter vein entitled "A Sorcerer Runs For Sherriff, a story of necro-(P.3)
