"Fantasy Organization To Be Started By NY-NJ Fans" read a meaningful headline on issue #4. It was kundane enough, but not under the surface, for the organization was the building of the idea which was to develope into NEW FANDOM, science-fiction's finest and most influential organization. The club that was sestined to sponsor the soon-to-be "WORLD STF CONVENTION". Thos S Gardner, one also read was coming to NY the next Fall Michael; Lowndes; Taurasi; & Wollheim had won the FAPA elections; The "Planeteer" was to be revived for one issue by editor Taurasi, and Mario Racic's "Movie Corner" was becoming firmly established as the fine column it eventually developed to be. The most important feature of #5 FANTASY NEWS was not any scoop news item. It was simply a new policy expressed in "Preview of the Pro's" an entire change in fan attitude, and a sign of the awakening of the pro mags from their lethargy of the past two years. Ray Van Houten Resigns as Man-Sec of the SFAA the July 31 edition read. It was the end for the old SFAA which had undergone a violent evolution in its few years of existence. FANTASY NEWS was already acknowledged as the finest paper of its type in the world. Issue 6 marked the end of Taurasi's solitary vigil. Sam Moskowitz joined the staff as reporter and Assistant Editor. Other members of the staff being Mario Racic, Louis Kualan & Will Sykora. "Watch for Science Fiction's greatest organization: NEW FANDOM!" stated issue 6 of FANTASY NEWS. With it's 8th number, FANTASY NEWS forged to unchallenged leadership in the field, its size, circulation, and staff or reporters increased weekly. It all came about thru one of the most startling news item of the year "CLAIRE P BECK, ED OF 'CRITIC' HITCHHIKES ACROSS COUNTRY FROM CALIFORNIA TO NEWARK, NJ. Then followed a tale of the adventures of Beck, and the fantasophiles he encountered on his journey across the continent. It was an item that remained news for months after it took place. But FANTASY NEWS did not rest on its Laurels. Immediately after the dynamic Beck scoop came when still more thrilling, more vital, more filled with amazing potentialities to the science-fiction world. No.9 headline read THE SFAA, TESSERACT, HELIOS, FANTASY REVIEW AND MANUSCRIPT BUREAU FORCED INTO ONE UNIT TO CREATE NEW FANDOM! SCIENCE FICTION'S GREATEST CLUB! From then on, any item of any importance in the world of science fiction, was mentioned First in FANTASY NEWS, a record for the times of STF. Weeks fled. A minor convention was held in New England. Kuslan took over COSMIC TALES, and Wiggins joined COSMIC PUBLICATIONS. Jack Speer moved to Washington, D.C. and visited Philadelphia. Finally Sunday, Sept. 18, 1938 came the news GREATER NY CHAPTER OF THE SFL DISSOLVED BY THRILLING WONDER STORIES! SYKORA UNFAIRLY EXPELLED, TAURASI RESIGNS IN DISGUST. Again a NY SFL chapter had broken up, but the results of that break up were to be for the best. Thos S Gardner was situated in NY now. Nile Frome was making plans to illegally cross the US border. THRILLING WONDER STORIES COMPANION MAGAZINE TO BE CALLED STARTLING STORIES- FIRST ISSUE OUT END OF OCTOBER! FANTASY NEWS scooped the fan world on that item. Also in the
