ficult until extra money was raised at the auction. 9. FSNY editors have given fans and fan publications more and better publicity than any other professional stf mags over a period years. 10. FSNY members made possible the success of Fantasy Fiction Field Illustrated News Weekly from the early part of 1941 until the present. Let's see some other fan club put forward a similar record of constructive science fictional activity. *** Very fine cover on this issue. Chauvenet's article interesting in subject, but not well handled to my taste -- it's little more than a catalogue. LRC should have taken time on it and made a careful analysis instead of Moskowitzing around. Hell Fire I enjoyed greatly and am ready to forgive any slams directed at honorable self or colleagues so long as its done in an interesting fashion -- and the rest of the column is interesting. Here's waiting for the next issue, Phil. ------------------------------------- And we duck as Milton A. Rothman blasts at Hell Fire. Milty says: ****Hell Fire's gall is divided into three parts: the cowardice of hiding behind a pseudonym while criticizing others, the conceit of holding himself up as a judge of the character and personal actions of others, and the nadtiness of suspecting the integrity of others who are better mannered than himself. It's pretty difficult to criticize this kind of article, because the writer covers himself very neatly with his apologetic phrases. He hopes that we can take a little open slamming, and suggests that those who can't just don't have the guts. He says, in effect, that Daughterty is a dope who talks a lot and doesn't do anything -- but of course, he may be wrong, he admits. He hopes that he has not sounded too egotistical. He hints that a few subtle compliments will be dished out -- so, I suppose, science fictions fans will fall over themselves to be good so that Hell Fire will pass out to them a rare compliment -- supreme thrill! **** As for his remarke concerning Daugherty there is one fact (Heinlein definition of fact) which Hell Fire omitted to mention. Daugherty was the best convention chairman we ever had, wasn't he? Where does Hell Fire get off predicting actions Daugherty is going to take in the future? **** Some more questions: what does Hell Fire mean by the sentence, "Notice how Socialistic DD'ers have made an attempt to tear things down." I presume he means Speer and myself. Speer is not a Socialist, but that is merely quibble. Where, precisely, have we attempted to tear anything down? It would be vulgar for me to list the buildings up we have performed. **** Hell Fire, no doubt, thinks he is original. Although he is merely following in the footsteps of such ego-deflaters as Sweetness of Sweetness and Light, and his philosophy does not have the maturity of Their Own Petard. **** When it comes to ego-deflating, fella, I'll do my own, thank you, whenever I think I need it. Or else take in the much better mannered style of Ackerman and Morojo. But I'll be damned if I'll listen to the hypocrisy of one who speaks about the loathsomeness of hypocrites and continues to hide behind the mask of a pseudonym. If we are going to be told off to our faces, we want to see the face of this guy who does it, and maybe we can decide whether this guy is worthy of judging us. And if Hell Fire is who I think he is, I don't think he is. -------------------------------------
