Page 2 FA--March 1942 CRITICS' REPORT***WINTER 1941 MAILING PAUL FREEHAFER, Official Critic K. C. KOENIG, Associate Critic MIMEOGRAPHED MATTER Fantasy Amateur V.4 N.2 Freehafer: A neat, worthwhile issue. Koenig: (No comment) MILTY'S MAG Dec. 1941 Freehafer: Still very good, even though "highbrow." Best question of the month: "What is the prupose of the official critic?" Koenig: Congratulations are in order on the new typewriter. It resulted in the neatest magazine in the mailing. Contents better than those in the previous issue. The review of the "Hampdenshire Wonder" was interesting. Can't say as much for the discussion on "Animistick or Behavioristic Concepts", etc. YHOS #2 Freehafer: Congratulations on a neat and interesting FAPA magazine. However, I didn't care for the attempt to justify war. Koenig: Mimeographically speaking, a good job. Too much space waster with non-fantasy items. The page philosophizing on war didn't sound like Widner; more like Speer or Rotham. And, who cares about the life and loves of that guy Singleton; let him stay dead. LAST TESTAMENT #1 Freehafer: Somewhat disconnected but good. Glad to see Byron join Gilbert as a source of characterizations for fans. Koenig: Editor Eastman will have to do much better to gain my vote of approval. After all, the F in FAPA still stands for Fantasy. SOUND OFF V 1 N 2 Freehafer: Both Gilbert and the contributors were interesting, 4c's letter being the best. Koenig: Not bad. Interesting and amusing reviews of the previous mailing by Messrs. Ackerman and Jenkins. JINX #1 Freehafer: This is getting monotonous, but I think it's a good magazine. I'm afraid a standard rating scale for so subjective a process as rating fan magazines would be impossible. Koenig: A rather colorless first number. I feel certain that Editor Jenkins is capable of producing better issues. STF HASH #1 Freehafer: Not as good as Jinx. Personally, I think we've heard far too much about that Purity Restaurant incident. Koenig: The only excuse for this one was some "70 odd shoos of pitty boo paper left over--". Editor Jenkins is frank--to say the least.
