** "Prose on the Pro's" *** JINX *** Page 10 Prose on the PROS [Images of Future and Stirring Science magazines.] "Wherein we give our opinions on that struggling group of mags known as the pros." Methinks that sometime ago, we saw where the trouble 'tween Albing Publications and there printers had been cleared up, & that Don's STIRRING would soon be out. Since we had been so immensely pleased with the first 5 issues, we were palpitating over this announcement. But still STIRRING hasn't appeared. It's a pity that such a mag would go to the dogs on account of printing trouble. Anyway, we enjoyed the first 3 issues, and found many a story that subscribed to our somewhat peculiar tastes. Though darkened by a poor sequel, "Thirteen O'Clock" remains foremost in our memory. The wacky fantasy that Kornbluth writes is now affecting us like de Camp, but like de Camp, Kornbluth thrilled us with his humor. We'll never forget that superbly written little short entitled "The Silence". And "The Words of Guru" linger awhile along with "Spokesman For Terra". But we are almost forgetting "!!!", "Blueprint", "Calypso's Island", and "The Doll Master". Someone, somewhere said that the fiction in STIRRING was nothing but better-than-average fan fiction. Might I comment that fan writing is nearing professional standards and that published in STIRRING was swellelegant? It seems to us that Don let COSMIC lapse while he struggled with STIRRING, for there weren't half as many 'good' tales in COSMIC as there were in STIRRING. Right at the present, very few come to our mind as being outstanding. Foremost is "The Improbable", a superb tale by Charles R. Tanner, closely followed by "Mocanica", "The Martians Are Coming", and damon's pome, "The Rocket". However, Don has built up two darn good mags, and it's a pity to see that one of 'em'll come back. If any come back. A change of editors can do a heck of a lot for a magazine. Well, FUTURE changed from Hornig to Lowndes and the change has brought FUTURE almost to the top of the list. Sure -- FUTURE has reprints, but so has FFM. And -- Doc has access to the files of the old SCIENCE AND INVENTION apparently, so he ought to be able to reprint some of those old ones that drew gasps of admiration in their time. The latest issue of FUTURE carries and Cummings reprint, "Around the Universe", which I liked better than the immortal "Girl In the Golden Atom". Not only has Doc been able to improve the fiction in the mag, but he's advanced the art dept. to the top of the list. With Dolgov, Bok, Forte, and knight, I don't see how he can miss. Those last two covers have been boo'ful. Doc has changed the fiction somewhat in eliminating all of the 'bazzleziggling' and going in a little bit more from the writing angle. Witness the last issue of FUTFIC. All of the stories except the Kummer stinkeroo, Cummings. and Pearson tale were nothing but superbly written incidents. Not stories, but more incidents. However, all except the Perri short were well written enough to merit their printing. Congratulations to Doc on a big success in his first year with FUTURE! *---*---*---*---*---*---*--- This is the last page of the first issue of Jinx. We know that it isn't much this mailing, 'cause it's overshadowed by Yhos, Last Will And Testament, SusPro, Milty's Mag, Koenig's Rag, and a score of others. But -- we hope you like it, 'cause -- aw heck, the end of the page never comes, but ahhhhh, toodle-oo.
