(That Singular Anomaly) material he turns out. That, he gave me to understand, is the true gauge of a fan's activity, and I find it interesting and rather amusing. So one is a fan if he hastens to turn out carloads of tripe, thus satisfying his starved craving for recognition because he writes so much and so poorly! So that is a true fan! One who writes because he loves to see his name in print! A true fan. Indeed. Well, if that is a true fan, thank heaven that the sage does not place me within those [august?] ranks! Perhaps our famous fan -- for so he is proud to think of himself -- had based his opinion about the girl fan and why she isn't, upon the fact that women do so little writing and publishing in the fan field. The men, of course, out-number the girls tremendously, and it is only natural that a great deal more of their work should appear. Still, I admit that there is not enuf heard from the girls. But it is not because they are not interested. In my own case, I cannot write as promiscuously as the fellows because I simply feel no urge to see my name under an article in every fanzine; because I feel that the majority of worthwhile topics has been pretty much exhausted; and because I have no desire to degenerate into a fan hack. I cannot publish in the FAPA as often as I would like because my time is fairly valuable, and my free hours are usually taken up with other matters. In answer to the reply that the true fan "makes" time somewhere to continue his prolific activities, I can only answer that I like to have time in which to do something well, not to shove it in edgewise and have it sloppily done. We "made" time once and I've always regretted it, for the particular effort was not at all praise-worthy. These are all, I think, very good reasons, but the most probable reason why the girls do not do so much writing is because mass fan production is generally done by the immature, and women are, of course, more mature than the men. But unless someone tells me why I am not a fan, and why a girl cannot be a fan, and proves it, I shall naively go on believing that I am one of the mob.
